Where can a Rice engineering degree take you? This fall’s Engineer Your Career panel brings together three Rice alumni whose careers have taken very different paths from the same engineering foundation.
Hear from alumni working across global energy and finance, crypto and fintech, and large-scale infrastructure and AI: a Managing Director in global energy risk management at Citi, the CTO of a crypto trading and asset management firm, and a software engineer at OpenAI.
During this virtual panel, our speakers will share how they went from Rice engineering students to where they are today — including the unexpected pivots, career changes, and decisions that shaped their paths. We’ll talk about moving from hands-on engineering into finance, transitioning from a PhD into industry, and building a career at the intersection of infrastructure and AI.
Panelists:
Eamon Baqui - ChemE ‘97 is Managing Director of Global Energy Risk Management at Citi in Houston, where he has worked for 15 years. He previously spent nearly a decade at Barclays Capital in credit risk management covering oil, gas, and commodities, and began his career as a process engineer at Fluor Daniel. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rice and an MBA in Finance from UT Austin.
Angela Zhu - PhD CompSci ‘09 is Chief Technology Officer at Avenir Group. She spent eight years at Coinbase, most recently as Senior Director of Engineering for Trading, after earlier roles leading payments and payments-risk teams, and previously worked on payments engineering at Airbnb and Square. She holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rice.
Fred Liu - CompSci, ‘13 ‘15 is currently a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI working on data platform and data infrastructure. He started career at Facebook in 2015 working on network and storage, and later spent years at Databricks working on data lake . He holds both a B.S. (2013, Baker) and M.S. (2015, advised by Prof. Eugene Ng) in Computer Science from Rice University.
